Curated by Lauren Hussey

October 21 – November 20, 2022
Opening Reception October 21 from 6 – 8 PM

Substrates of Action is an exhibition which brings together paintings and drawings by three artists whose work engages with legibility of language through gesture and exaggeration. Each independently layer by using mark and form, intersecting at the point of suggestion and withholding.

Andrew Prayzner’s paintings display variations of text and writing-like script that simultaneously hover above and are embedded within the image plane whether that be of a red curtain or a still life with flowers. The drawings of Kalina Winters include segmented and exaggerated figures that fill the surface and are often displayed stacked. The arrangements obscure legibility, and the emotive expressions and poses evoke territories of body language and dysmorphic possibilities.

Rosaire Appel has included a selection of drawings that delve into what it is to mimic action on a two-dimensional surface. Drawings from her “Remedial Reading” series refer to the experience of what happens with the eyes while reading in private. Her drawings from her “Accounting for Nothing” series contain inked marks on vintage ledger paper that could be read as shorthand yet proclaim to account for themselves and nothing else.Appel’s work asks, “isn’t there more to reading than words?”

Rosaire Appel – (NYC) is involved with visual languages via drawing. Many of her drawings end up in books, both commercially printed and one of a kind. Her work has been published in many small magazines and has been exhibited both here and in Europe She posts regularly on social media and her website is www.rosaireappel.com
